Olive Ridley, an endangered turtle species reach our Chennai shores from December unto March every year with the ocean currents, from as far as the Pacific Ocean. They nest on chennai beaches at night, laying eggs as they have been doing for 180 million years.ezoneINDIA endeavours to create awareness about the plight of this endangered species and the state of coastal environment.
Olive Ridleys rarely weigh over 50 kg. It will take 45 days for the eggs to hatch and once they are out of their shells they fend for themselves. The Olive Ridley turtles nest on Chennai beaches at night, between December and April every year.
Human predation in the nesting habitat, coastal degradation and development and fishing practices such as the use of long lines and gill nets also contribute to the decimation of the Olive Ridley turtles by an astounding fifty percent during the last several decades.
Turtles swim more than 21000 miles to make their nest and lay eggs. So let’s run to save these beautiful swimmers. By supporting Ridley Run, you are helping to create awareness of the endangered Olive ridley turtle population, help local communities and to protect thousands of hatchlings.
